Artist Andrew Woolery utilizes everyday objects like thumbtacks to produce meticulous renditions of black icons in pop culture. Using thousands of thumbtacks for each large-scale piece, Woolery says he was inspired by the bright colors of Fruit Loops, the breakfast cereal. The artist does a spot-on job of recreating portraits of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Jimi Hendrix, and President Obama. In addition, Woolery created a giant replica of the one-hundred dollar bill entitled It’s All About the Benjamins, replacing Benjamin Franklin with Benjamin Banneker. Banneker was a free African-American who was an accomplished astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, almanac author, and farmer.
You can purchase the artist’s works in varied forms, from the originals to digital photo prints, directly from his website. A percentage of many of his pieces also go to good causes like the Harlem School of Arts in an effort to give back to underprivileged communities and to support the arts.
