In Argentina, A Grand Theatre Converted Into A Bookstore

April 17, 2012

While a church in Holland boasts what could be the most magical bookstore, an old theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina could very well rival it.

Located in the neighborhood of Recoleta, El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore sits within an old theatre built in 1919—blending history with art.

The theatre-turned-bookstore features high, dramatic ceilings, carved balconies, old-world sculptures and thick, stage curtains and attracts some 3,000 visitors daily.

El Ateneo even serenades visitors with an on-stage live pianist, making them feel like intellectual aristocrats alright.
